ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Nearly a month after a deadly tornado ripped through parts of St. Louis, the need for help hasn’t gone away - and one community food drive is stepping up to remind people of that.

On Saturday, gratitude echoed through the parking lot at Chaminade College Preparatory School, where volunteers and families came together to those still picking up the pieces.

“Honestly love that we can just come together and watch all these people just donate and help all these people in need because it’s truly awesome to see,“ said Abigail Knopp, volunteer.

Volunteers offered helping hands as each car arrived, many packed with essentials for families impacted by the May 16 tornado.

The event was made possible through a partnership between the St. Louis Area food bank, the Jayson Tatum Foundation, KTRS and First Alert 4.

There was a steady stream of offering not just supplies, but a sense of hope as well.

Still, nearly a month after the storm, organizers said the initial surge of donations is beginning to slow.

“It really after a couple of weeks. People get back to their lives,” Alesia Roccia said. “It‘s human nature.”

Alesia Roccia, St. Louis Area Foodbank, said the need continues.

“I want everyone to look at their own lives. You go to the grocery store once, it’s not one and done. You have to go back and buy toilet paper. You have to go back and buy the essentials,” she said.

And for the families who lost everything, that hits even harder.

“It continues day after day and we can’t stop and we can’t forget,” she said.

And while the need remains, it’s in moments like these that we are reminded of how much generosity still lies ahead.
