Gov. Kehoe appoints SLMPD transition Director
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Governor Mike Kehoe on Friday appointed a transition director in the state takeover of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD).
Derek Winters will take on the role to assist with moving oversight of the city police to a citizen-led board of police commissioners.
Winters will work closely with St. Louis officials, the police department and state leaders to create a smooth transition that is set to happen by July 1, 2026.
Mayor Cara Spencer said in response to the appointment, “I spoke to the governor’s office and have full confidence that this appointment doesn’t change the chief’s ability to lead the City of St. Louis’ police department this weekend and in the future. While the governor and I disagree on the issue of local control, we share the common goal of a successful SLMPD, and I look forward to meeting with Mr. Winters in the near future.”
SLMPD Police Chief Robert Tracy said, “I fully the Governor’s appointment and look forward to meeting and working with Mr. Winters during this shift of governance. Our priorities remain clear — maintaining public safety, ing our officers and continuing to serve the City of St. Louis.”
