CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (First Alert 4) - U.S. Senator Dick Durban was in Cahokia Heights today, marking a big step in the city’s sewer improvement project.

The senator announced that phase one of the project is officially complete.

The city’s sewer trunkline project was ed by Federal funding after years of problems.

A settlement was reached earlier this year over alleged violations of the Clean Water Act and the Illinois Environmental Protection Act.

The complaint alleges the sewerage has been dumped into local waterways at least 300 times since 2019.

A grant from the EPA calls for the work to be completed this year, but officials estimate it could stretch into 2026.
