ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) -- A disaster assistance center has opened at Chaifetz Arena on the Saint Louis University campus.

The arena includes a number of city and state departments, nonprofits, healthcare providers and other organizations onsite to provide assistance to tornado victims dealing with displacement or damage.

On Monday morning Jeremiah Jones, whose building was badly damaged, came to find out what kinds of help might be available.

“I’m worried about rent and utilities, not being homeless,” Jones said. “I’m just trying to get help and different resources.”

Jones was able to connect with Cool Down St. Louis, which agreed to help him with his utility bill and another issue Jones is having with his Ameren .

He also consulted with the Missouri Department of Social Services to find out what resources might be available for him and his family.

At one point Jones took a blood pressure test at a station staffed by EMS workers. He found out that his blood pressure had reached dangerously high levels, which Jones attributed to anxiety about his situation. He said he was living in a building with a detached chimney that was precariously perched on the roof.

At one point a representative for a behavioral health organization simply gave him a hug and some resources for mental and emotional .

“There are people around you who care,” Jones said. “So never give up.”

The center will be open June 9 through 12, June 16 through 18 and June 23 through 26. The center will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

You can reserve an appointment on the St. Louis City website.

A photo ID is needed. If your ID does not have your current address, proof of address will be required. The Missouri Department of Revenue will also be on-site to assist people who do not have a photo ID.

According to the city, organizations on site at the center include Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Missouri Department of Social Services, Missouri Department of Mental Health, Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance, Affinia Healthcare, BJC Behavioral Health, Employment Connections, the St. Louis Area Foodbank, Americorps St. Louis, and of the St. Louis Regional Area Coalition of COADs organizations.
