ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - After several controversial issues, St. Louis Sheriff Alfred Montgomery is under fire, and now, a local organization is calling on the Attorney General and the Circuit Attorney to remove him from the job.

“The Holy Joe Society is concerned that Sheriff Montgomery in the city is violating very important laws,” said Bevis Schock, who sits on the board of directors of the Holy Joe Society.

The Holy Joe Society, a non-profit organization focused on government transparency, is calling for Sheriff Montgomery’s removal. They sent the letter to Missouri Attorney General, Andrew Bailey, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore, and the St. Louis City Counselor.

“There’s something called the ouster statute, and it’s a Missouri law that says when an elected official does bad things like that, the court can remove that person from the office,” said Schock.

In the letter, the organization highlights four instances when they said Sheriff Montgomery broke the law.

They include:

  1. Sheriff Montgomery caused employees in his office to use government vehicles to take his children to and from school.
  2. Arresting the acting Corrections Commissioner while attempting to exercise dominion and control over the St. Louis City Justice Center.
  3. Forced an employed deputy to roll dice in order to avoid being fired.
  4. Sheriff Montgomery has failed and refused to assign enough deputies to maintain courthouse security.

“The letter basically says ‘lets get on with it, please start a lawsuit’, and if you don’t, will you give us consent to do it’,” said Schock.

There is no deadline for a response, but the organization hopes to have an answer within the next week. Until then, he hopes Montgomery will do what he says is the right thing.

“The Sheriff could do the right thing and just resign. I think the chance of that is approaching zero,” said Schock.

Sheriff Montgomery’s office saw the letter and sent the response to First Alert 4:

“The claims made by the Holy Joe Society regarding Sheriff Alfred Montgomery are based on false and misleading media reports, not verified facts. These accusations are politically motivated and lack any credible evidence. We urge the public and officials to reserve judgment until all facts are thoroughly reviewed through proper legal channels.”
