St. Louis music legend returns home to launch DJ school for city youth
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) -Brian Nelson has been a fixture in St. Louis music for more than 30 years.
Also known as “DJ Kut”, the long-time deejay has come back home to launch a music program designed to teach kids how to use turntables and keep them out of trouble.
DJ Kut University is the name of the 8-week course.
“We want to give kids something to do directly after school, says Brian “DJ Kut” Nelson. Being a DJ and getting into music you can make money for the rest of your life. I’m 55 and I’m still doing it.”
The Hip Hop school is offered at Tandy Community Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm-7pm.
“Some people don’t have the opportunities to play, DJ and they don’t have the opportunity to have this kind of chance,” says student Octavious Archer.
“I feel like a proud father, DJ Kut says. If you can make it in St. Louis, you can make it anywhere.”
DJ Kut University is looking to expand the program to every St. Louis City recreation center and partner with the Office of Violence Prevention.
“It’s important to give back because when I away, I can’t take it with me,” says DJ Kut. “If you can make it in St. Louis, you can make it anywhere.”
